Basic Visa and Passport Information

To enter Kenya & Tanzania, travelers must possess a valid passport and a visa.  Kindly apply for an e-visa beforehand. Ensure your passport has at least six months of validity from your departure date.

Mandatory Vaccination Requirements for Entry

Yellow Fever – Yellow fever is a viral disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. While most infected individuals exhibit mild symptoms, severe cases can lead to hemorrhagic fever with a high mortality rate.

Kenya & Tanzania requires all visitors over one year of age coming from or transiting through yellow fever endemic countries to present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. This precautionary measure aims to prevent the spread of the disease.

The yellow fever vaccination is only effective 10 days after receiving the vaccine. Therefore, the accompanying certificate comes into effect after 10 days and remains valid for ten years. Ensure you receive the vaccination well before your departure to meet this requirement. Visit an authorized vaccination clinic or travel health center to receive the yellow fever vaccine and obtain the necessary certificate. Confirm that the center is accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO). Be sure to store your certificate safely with other travel documents required for entry (Passport etc.)

Current COVID-19 Situation

At present, there are no restrictions related to COVID-19 applicable to travelers from any country across the globe. As the COVID-19 situation evolves, Kenya & Tanzania may update its entry requirements. Stay updated on travel advisories and guidelines issued by the Kenyan & Tanzanian government and relevant health authorities. Reliable vaccines are available worldwide and are recommended for all individuals.

Other Diseases to Consider

Malaria

Malaria occurs mainly in tropical regions and the infected parasites are transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito into the bloodstream of humans. There is currently no effective vaccine against infection. However, various anti-malaria prophylaxis medications exist which can reduce the risk of infection. Consult your healthcare provider or local travel clinic for further information about the available drugs. Bear in mind that some of these medications may cause unpleasant side effects.

To further minimize the risk of infection, take preventative measures to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Measures include applying insect repellent and by wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants in the evening and early morning. Most accommodation establishments provide mosquito nets over beds.

  • Plan Ahead – Start preparing for your Africa adventure well in advance to allow ample time for necessary vaccinations and health documentation.
  • Organizing Travel Documents – Passport, Visa, and Health Certificates Keep all your travel documents organized in one place, including your passport, visa, and health certificates.

Baggage

Baggage space on safari is restricted to one medium suitcase per person, plus hand baggage (private safaris where there are less than seven persons in the vehicle are not subject to this restriction). Small duffel bags are however comfortable to travel with. A baggage weight restriction of 15 kg per person applies on air safaris. Where very small aircraft are used this may be reduced to 10 kg. Brima Safaris will not be liable to any loss of baggage or personal effects.

Currency

While the East African countries all have their own currencies, most tourist attractions are priced in US Dollars. Our recommendation is to take US Dollars with you for spending money and visa costs and change small amounts into local currency if need be. The official currency in Kenyan/Tanzania and Uganda is Shillings, Franc in Rwanda although United States Dollar is also accepted.

Tipping and Porterage

Although hotels and lodges include a service charge, it is customary to tip porters, waiters, taxi drivers and safari drivers/guides.

Language

  • Kenya – Kiswahili is the lingua franca while English is the official language. In addition, most Kenyan tribes have their own language.
  • Tanzania – Swahili, the language spoken by vast majority of Tanzanians, is the most widely understood language in Africa after Arabic.

Security

Normal precautions as in any other destination worldwide should be taken. Visitors are advised not to leave cash and valuables in the hotel rooms but to make use of safe deposit boxes and safes. Before photographing local people, permission should be obtained and a fixed price agreed. Seek the assistance of your driver/guide in this matter.

Cuisine

The multicultural nature of the population is reflected in the international cuisine and dietary needs are easily accommodated.
